NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- St. Catherine softball tallied 17 runs in the conference series sweep of the Carleton Knights on Thursday in Northfield. The Wildcats recorded a 6-3 victory in game one before putting up an 11-5 defeat in the second game. St. Kate's improves to 17-11 overall with a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) record of 10-4.
GAME ONE | St. Catherine 6, Carleton 3
St. Kate's started out game one taking an early two run lead in the opening inning. Junior
Julia Azure recorded the first run of the day off a hit from
Alyssa Montero advancing
Alex Ehde putting her in scoring position with Kaitlin Boyles at the plate.
Montero's double in the third inning put the Wildcats up again by two bringing in Azure and Ehde. St. Kate's went on to add runs in the fourth and the sixth both from
Taylor Brunn.
Ehde was 4 for 4 with two runs and one RBI and Montero hit 3 for 3 with 3 RBI. Azure recorded two doubles in the game hitting 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBI.
Montero earned the win in the circle with nine strikeouts and giving up just one earned run playing the complete game.
GAME TWO | St. Catherine 11, Carleton 5
The Wildcats bats were hot in game two of the conference series taking a nine run lead by the fourth inning.
Annabelle Schutte was the first across the plate in game two off
Lindsay Burr's double to left center in the second inning. MiKayla Grant scored the Wildcats second run before Burr and
Sarah Posey plated the third and fourth runs of the inning.
St. Kate's posted five runs in the top of the fourth inning with Brunn getting things started. Montero and Azure added runs off a double to left field from Grant before Burr drove in Boyles and Posey brought in Grant.
The Knights added three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth and added another run in the bottom of the sixth. The Wildcats final two runs came in the top of the seventh sealing the 11-5 victory.
Schutte collected two strikeouts giving up just two earned runs in seven innings. She also hit 3 for 5 with one run.
Burr was 3 for 4 with one double, three RBI and one run. Boyles hit 3 for 5 with two runs, two doubles and two RBI while Grant was 2 for 4 with two runs, two RBI and two doubles.
St. Kate's will host the College of Saint Benedict on Saturday, April 23 with games at 1 and 3 pm.
