Wildcats split MIAC wins with Saint Mary's on Saturday

ROSEVILLE, Minn. -- The St. Catherine softball team opened the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) season hosting the Saint Mary's University Cardinals on Saturday on the campus of the University of Northwestern-St. Paul. The Cardinals claimed game one over the Wildcats 10-7 before St. Kate's turned it around in game two to clinch a 9-1 victory improving to 8-8 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC.

GAME ONE | Saint Mary's 10, St. Kate's 7
Saint Mary's struck first in game one taking a two run lead in the top of the first. The Wildcats tied it up in the bottom of the inning before the Cardinals added five unanswered runs. Sophomore Kaitlín Boyles (Woodbury, Minn., East Ridge) snapped the Cardinals run streak with a home run in the bottom of the fourth for a score of 9-3 going into the fifth.

The Cardinals added one final run in the top of the sixth before the Wildcats inched their way back adding four. Boyles was 2 for 4 with two runs and one RBI ahead of senior Angela Huepfel (Hudson, Wis., Hudson) hitting 2 for 3 with one run, one RBI and a walk. Senior Annabelle Schutte (St. Louis Park, Minn., St. Louis Park) started the game in the circle allowing eight hits and giving up eight runs. She recorded three strikeouts in 3.2 innings before sophomore Erica Pronschinske (Plainfield, Wis., Tri-County Area) finished the game. Pronschinske gave up two runs and collected two strikeouts.

GAME TWO | St. Kate's 9, Saint Mary's 1 (6 innings)
Senior Lindsay Burr (Baldwin, Wis., Baldwin-Woodville) drove senior Alex Ehde (Stillwater, Minn., Stillwater) in right away to get the Wildcats scoring started in game two. Boyles brought in Burr off a double to center field giving St. Kate's an early 2-0 lead. Scoring commenced again in the bottom of the third inning with St. Kate's adding three runs off of 4 hits.

The Cardinals lone run of the game was the result of a homer in the top of the fifth before the Wildcats added two. Junior pitcher Alyssa Montero (Circle Pines, Minn., Centennial) held off Saint Mary's in the top of the sixth striking out two back to back.  Ehde doubled to left field with one out in the bottom of the inning to get in scoring position with Montero at bat. Montero clinched the win for St. Kate's with a walk off home run for a final of 9-1 in six innings.

Burr was 3 for 3 with 3 runs, 3 RBI, two stolen bases, and one double. Ehde was 3 for 4 with three runs, one double, two stolen bases and Montero was 3 for 4 with 3 runs, two RBI, one stolen base and one home run. Montero also claimed the win in the circle with seven strikeouts allowing one run off of five hits.
