Wildcat softball opens season going 2-0 in Rochester

ROCHESTER, Minn. - The St. Catherine University softball team collected two wins on Saturday at the Rochester Dome defeating Dubuque 7-0, and Nebraska Wesleyan University, 5-3.  

Kathryn Proper led the Wildcats to a 7-0 victory in game one with Angela Huepfel and Julia Azure with two runs a piece. Proper pitched a three-hit complete game shutout against Dubuque with seven strikeouts. 

Huepfel had two runs with three at bats while rookie Azure was 1/4 with two runs and one RBI. Mikayla Grant had the Wildcats first double ot the season going 1 for 3 in te first game. Overall, St. Kate's had seven runs off of six hits and five RBIs in the opening game of the season claiming the first victory of 2020. 

In the second game of the day against Nebraska Wesleyan, the Prairie Wolves took an early lead with a two-run opening inning. They scored again in the bottom of the third which would go on to be their final run of the game. 

St. Kate's had a six-run inning in the top of the sixth led by Grant and Lindsay Burr. Grant was three for three with one run and two RBIs. Burr was one for one with one run, two RBIs off a double. Alyssa Montero and Taylor Clarke also recorded their first collegiate doubles in the second game. 

Annabelle Schutte started in the circle for the purple and gold pitching four innings allowing eight hits and three earned runs. Al. Montero entered the game in the bottom of the fifth inning earning her first-collegiate victory with one hit and two strikeouts. 

St. Catherine returns to action at 10 am facing the University of Wisconsin Platteville and close out the weekend with a 2 pm game with Dominican University. Both games will be played at the Rochester Dome.
