NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Rookies
Cierra Ahlf and
Bree Glynn led St. Catherine to a 50-39 victory Saturday over the Carleton College Knights. The win improves the Wildcats to 7-8 overall and 4-6 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). With ten regular-season games remaining, St. Catherine is tied for seventh in the conference with St. Olaf College and just one game spot behind Concordia College who is 4-5.
It was a slow start for both teams tallying just nine combined points in the opening quarter with St. Catherine up 5-4. The Wildcats nearly tripled their points total in the second quarter adding 13 led by junior
Brooke Torvik with five and senior
Danica Cambrice adding four. St. Catherine was able to build a seven-point cushion over Carleton up 18-11 heading into the half.
Sophomore's
Katie Benjamin and
Mackenzie Kurczek each had five points in the third quarter combining for ten of St. Catherine's 12 total points. The Wildcats were able to improve their lead to 13 before allowing the Knights six charity points to get within a seven-point difference again heading into the final ten minutes.
All eight of Ahlf's points were scored in the fourth quarter knocking down 4 of her 6 free-throw attempts and shooting 50 percent from the field in the last ten minutes. Glynn and senior
Jackie Radford each added four in the Wildcats' 20-point quarter as Benjamin, Kurczek and junior
Kassidy Jenkins rounded out the scoring for the team. Glynn also had eight points total in the win with four rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Radford recorded a game-high 12 boards to go along with her four points, pair of assists, and one steal against the Knights improving her season total to 104 rebounds which ranks her No. 4 in the MIAC this season.
Kurczek was 3 for 5 from the field with seven points tied with Benjamin with seven points and eight boards. Cambrice finished with nine rebounds, six total points, two assists, and two steals. While Torvik led the team in steals with three to go along with her five points and one rebound.
St. Catherine is home again on Wednesday, January 22 hosting Saint Mary's University at 7 pm. The Wildcats and Cardinals met earlier in the season with St. Catherine claiming the 79-77 victory.
