Wildcats sweep Macalester to pick up first MIAC win

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Wrapping up the day of Wildcat home events was the St. Catherine University Wildcat volleyball team picking up their first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win over the Macalester College Scots in three straight sets. The Wildcats advance to 9-7 overall and 1-5 in the MIAC. 

Macalester struggled against the Wildcats from the start with 9 errors in the first set and a hitting percentage of just .027 to the Wildcats 0 errors and hitting .382%. In the first set, the Wildcats took down the Scots 25-12. 

In the second set, junior Larissa Kisch (Oakdale, Minn. / Cretin-Derham Hall) went on a run from the service line getting St. Kate's a 6-1 lead early. The Scots were able to find a little momentum in the second set picking up their most points of the match with 16. Coming off a record performance Wednesday, the Wildcats were just too much for the Scots though taking the second set at 25-16. 

In the final set of the match, the Wildcats overpowered the Scots again only giving up 8 points. Sophomore middle hitter Erin Cutts (Osceola, Wis.) started out the first serving rally for the Wildcats getting the team an 8-2 lead. The second long service run came from junior setter Meagan Schwarzrock (Hutchinson, Minn. / Valley City State) adding 6 more to the Scots 1 point. The Wildcats took the final set at 25-8. 

The Wildcats allowed only 27 points in the quick three set match with junior outside hitter Emma Nelson (Byron, Minn.) leading with 12 kills and 4 digs. First-year libero Grace Amacher (Faribualt, Minn.) added 18 kills to her impressive season total at 289. Amacher continues to lead the MIAC with with 5.78 digs per set. Cutts has also stood out in the last two matches as a powerhouse at the net with 7 kills and 3 blocks. 

Today's match was the start of a long home stretch for St. Kate's as they are home again Wednesday as they take on St. Olaf College in a 7 p.m. match on Purple Rain Night also honoring St. Kate's Faculty. Following Wednesday's match, the Wildcats host the St. Kate's volleyball tournament on Friday and Saturday. Find out more information on the tournament here.
