Soccer, volleyball ready for MIAC opponents

ST. PAUL, MINN. – It was a pretty exciting day for the St. Catherine University volleyball and soccer teams last Saturday. The Wildcat soccer team earned their first overall and Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win of the season, while volleyball nearly upended Saint Mary's University for its first MIAC win of the season.

On Wednesday, both teams take on conference opponents in key MIAC games. Soccer will travel to Northfield, Minnesota to take on Carleton College at 4 p.m., while volleyball will host Augsburg University at 7 p.m. in the Butler Center Gym.

Wildcat fans can watch tonight's events in multiple ways. For those who can't make the trip to Northfield, both live stats and video will be available for St. Kate's soccer game. The same will be true for St. Kate's volleyball home match versus Augsburg. Fans can tune in via live stats and/or video, and live score updates can be found on St. Kate's official Twitter page (@stkateswildcats).

Here are the five things to know before this afternoon's big MIAC matchups:

14 – The Wildcat volleyball team set a new program record for blocks in a single match, according to available records. St. Kate's totaled 14 blocks in its 3-2 loss to Saint Mary's on Saturday, thanks to career highs from Hannah Flatness (Elk Mound, Wis. / Elk Mound) and Kelly Breuer (St. Paul, Minn. / St. Croix Lutheran). Both Flatness and Breuer were credited with seven blocks during the match, while Libby Kreuser (White Bear Lake, Minn. / Totino-Grace) added five.

80 – Junior forward Kaitlin Machovec (Woodbury, Minn. / North St. Paul) and senior center back Shannon Hickey (Eden Prairie, Minn. / Visitation) account for 80% of the Wildcats goals this season. Both Machovec and Hickey have scored two goals, while sophomore Maddie Conners (Lake Elmo, Minn. / Hill-Murray) has also scored for St. Kate's this season.

22 – Those individuals weren't the only ones having career matches against Saint Mary's last weekend. Sophomore libero Larissa Kisch (Oakdale, Minn. / Cretin-Derham Hall) tallied a career-high 22 digs in the match to lead the Wildcats defensively. Emma Nelson (Byron, Minn. / Bryon) also reached a career high in the same category, with 16 digs during the five set match.

10 – Sophomore goalkeeper Tayler Koop (Blaine, Minn. / Blaine) made a career and season high 10 saves in St. Kate's 2-0 shutout of Bethel last Saturday. The sophomore also earned the first shutout win of her career, having blanked the Royals after 90 minutes of play.

2 – St. Kate's continues to be one of the top serving teams in the MIAC. The Wildcats as a team lead the conference in both overall (115) and conference (23) service aces thanks to a 2.13 aces per set average. Breuer and Emily Neumann (Duluth, Minn. / Hermantown) are a big part of St. Kate's success. Breuer currently leads the MIAC in aces/set average (.57) and Neumann is second with a .54 average.
