MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – Tuesday, September 12 marks an important day for the St. Catherine University soccer team. After opening their season with the most difficult schedule in program history, the Wildcats begin Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play Tuesday evening, as they take on Augsburg University at 7:30 p.m. in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
For the second time this season, St. Kate's will have the opportunity to play under the lights, so to speak, as the game will take place on Augsburg's football field.
Live stats and
video will be available and scoring updates will be made on the Wildcats official Twitter (@stkateswildcats).
Here are the five things to know before tonight's MIAC matchup between the Wildcats and Auggies:
2 – Both St. Kate's and Augsburg qualified for the MIAC playoffs last season as the No. 4 and 3 seeds respectively. The Wildcats advanced to the semi-final round for the first time in program history, thanks to a dramatic win on penalty kicks in the quarterfinal. Unfortunately, St. Kate's was unable to meet Augsburg in the championship round, having lost to St. Thomas 1-0 in the semifinal.
1st – On that note, the Auggies are the reigning MIAC Playoff Champions, having upset top-seeded St. Thomas in the championship game. Former Augsburg forward Marta Anderson scored the lone goal of the game 15 minutes in to earn the MIAC automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
5 – Five yellow cards were issued in St. Kate's 4-0 loss to UW-Whitewater on Saturday, marking it as one of the most physical games in program history.
Marissa Janssen (Oakdale, Minn. / North) and
Iryna Talkachova (Minsk, Belarus / Shattuck-St. Mary's) both received yellow cards in the second half of the game, while three different Warhawks received cautions.
1 – In that same game, the Wildcats held No. 10 UW-Whitewater to just one goal in the first 45 minutes of regulation. Karina Rosales scored the Warhawks first goal of the game at 26:11 on a corner kick.
20 – Augsburg midfielder Ashley St. Aubin leads the MIAC in shots this season with 20. In the Auggies first three games of the season, St. Aubin has averaged roughly six shots a game and has scored four goals, the fifth highest total in the conference. Augsburg has played Minnesota-Morris, Wartburg, and Northwestern (Minn.) this season.
