Tennis to face Bethel in MIAC playoffs

| MIAC Playoff Preview | MIAC Playoff Page |

ST. PAUL, MINN. – For the St. Catherine University tennis team, April showers brought a little more than May flowers. Thanks to a fantastic late March and April, the Wildcats will play in their seventh-consecutive Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) postseason tournament on Wednesday, when St. Kate's will face Bethel University in the Quarterfinal Round.

Thanks to a 6-4 record in MIAC play, the Wildcats will be the No. 5 seed in the MIAC playoffs and will face the No. 4 seeded Royals. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. in Arden Hills, Minnesota, unless the weather is uncooperative, and the winner will face either Carleton College or Gustavus in the semifinal round.

Here are the five facts to know before St. Kate's playoff match on Wednesday:

3 – Three Wildcat student-athletes have been named MIAC Women's Tennis Athlete-of-the-Week this season. Julia Sporer (Rogers, Minn. / Rogers) earned the honor on March 14, Alisha Wiedmeier (Rapid City, S.D. / Stevens) and Bri Dorr (Princeton, Minn. / Princeton) earned the honor back-to-back weeks.

6-3 – St. Kate's earned its berth to the MIAC playoffs on April 11, when the Wildcats defeated Macalester College 6-3 in conference play.

4 – St. Kate's and Bethel faced each other exactly four days ago in the final dual match of the regular season. The Royals won the dual 5-4 to earn the No. 4 seed in the tournament despite the Wildcats best efforts to pull off the upset.

11 – Three Wildcats have won at least 11 matches in singles play this season. Lone senior Alicia Knoll (Waseca, Minn. / Waseca) won 11 matches all as St. Kate's No. 1 singles play, while Sporer and Jessica Duda (St. Michael, Minn. / St. Michael-Albertville) have both won 11 matches as the Wildcats No. 4 and 5 singles players.

11-2 – St. Kate's No. 2 doubles team of Sporer and Wiedmeier has posted an 11-2 record in dual matches this weekend, including a 7-2 record in MIAC play. Overall, Sporer is 14-6 in doubles play in 2017, while Wiedmeier is 12-6.
