ST. PETER, MINN. – The St. Catherine University tennis team has enjoyed quite a bit of success in the months of March and April. The Wildcats have enjoyed a nine match win streak over the last two months and clinched their seventh straight berth to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) postseason tournament. Unfortunately, St. Kate's was unable to come up with win No. 10, as it fell to perennial power Gustavus Adolphus College 9-0.
The Wildcats fell behind early after the Gusties won all three matches in doubles play. St. Kate's No. 1 team of
Alicia Knoll (Waseca, Minn. / Waseca) and
Bri Dorr (Princeton, Minn. / Princeton) lost to Michaela Schulz and Ally Baker 8-2, while the Wildcats No. 2 and 3 teams both fell by scores of 8-5.
St. Kate's tried to rebound with wins in singles play, but unfortunately went down in straight sets in all six matches.
Jessica Duda (St. Michael, Minn. / St. Michael-Albertville) almost upset Cal Carlson in the opening set of their match, but fell in the tiebreaker 7-6. She tried to take the second set, but an early break by Carlson led to a 7-6, 6-3 loss for Duda.
Leah Obert (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley) also battled in her match against Lilly Hartman at the No. 6 singles position, but eventually fell 7-5, 6-1. Dorr fell 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot, while Knoll and
Alisha Wiedmeier fell at the No. 1 and 2 singles spots. Knoll lost to Schulz 6-2, 6-0 while Wiedmeier fell 6-0, 6-1.
Julia Sporer (Rogers, Minn. / Rogers) was the final Wildcat to compete Saturday afternoon. She lost to Katie Aney 6-1, 6-0.
With the loss, St. Kate's overall record falls to 11-5 and 6-3 in MIAC play. The Wildcats will return to the court at 10 a.m. on Saturday, when they host Bethel University in the final match of the regular season.
