PHOENIX, ARIZ. – It's been a long six months for the St. Catherine University golf team. After winning the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Championship back in October, the Wildcats had to wait almost 180 days to play golf again. When the team finally hit the course again on Thursday, St. Kate's picked up right where it left off in October, carding 330 team points to beat the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in Phoenix, Arizona.
The Wildcats claimed the top three spots in individual scores, as two student-athletes finished ina tie for first place.
Sydney Busker (Detroit Lakes, Minn. / Detroit Lakes) and
Madi Roe (Apple Valley, Minn. / Eastview) carded the lowest scores of the day for St. Kate's, as both shot a low 78 on the 18-hole course. That score was seven strokes better than the third-place finisher, and was both individual's lowest 18-round score of the 2016-17 season.
Taylor Krouse (New Prague, Minn. / Prague) followed up her career performance at the MIAC Championship with the third lowest score on the course, as she shot a single-round score of 85, while
Abby Conzemius (Chanhassen, Minn. / Chanhassen) finished with a single-round score of 89.
Kaitelyn Alvarez (Eau Claire, Wis. / North) was the final golfer whose score counted to the overall team score. The junior finished the round with a score of 92, bringing St. Kate's team score total to 330. That score was 30 strokes lower than the Warhawks, who finished with a single round score of 360.
Nicole Traxler (Northfield, Minn. / Northfield) and
Maddie Weinman (St. Francis, Minn. / St. Francis) both competed as individuals for St. Kate's, although their scores did not count towards the team total. Traxler finished in fourth place with an 86 while Weinman was one place behind her in fifth with a single-round score of 88.
The Wildcats will return to action on April 9, when they will compete in a dual against Bethel University at 2:30 p.m. on April 9. The competition will take place at Oneka Ridge golf course in St. Paul, Minnesota.
