MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – Last weekend, the St. Catherine University tennis team scored two huge victories in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play. Saturday evening, the good times kept rolling for the Wildcats, as they beat the College of Saint Benedict 7-2 to improve to 4-2 in MIAC play.
St. Kate's got the ball rolling early, as it took a 3-0 lead after doubles play.
Alicia Knoll (Waseca, Minn. / Waseca) and
Bri Dorr (Princeton, Minn. / Princeton) opened the evening with a convincing 8-2 win in the No. 1 spot, while both the Wildcats No. 2 and 3 teams earned solid, hard fought victories. Alisha Weidmeier (Rapid City, S. D. / Stevens) and
Julia Sporer (Rogers, Minn. / Rogers) earned the second point for St. Kate's with an 8-5 win as the No. 2 team while
Aubrey Eckstrom (St. James, Minn. / St. James) and
Leah Obert (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley) took the third match 8-4.
Singles play was just as smooth for the Wildcats as doubles play, as Knoll, Dorr,
Jessica Duda (St. Michael, Minn. / St. Micahel-Albertville) and Obert all defeated their Blazer opponent. Knoll provided the most dramatic victory of the evening, as she and Saint Ben's Laura Finn needed a third set tiebreaker to determine the winner. Fortunately, Knoll prevailed, taking the match 6-0, 6-7, 10-4.
Thanks to the victory, St. Kate's is now 5-4 overall with a 4-2 mark in MIAC play. The Wildcats will head to Florida on Sunday for their spring break trip, where they will take on four nonconference teams in five days.
