ST. PAUL, MINN. – The St. Catherine University swimming and diving team's busy weekend concluded the same way it started with a win against a fellow team from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponent. Less than 24 hours after beating Macalester in a dual, the Wildcats returned to the pool to face Concordia College. The result was nearly identical to Friday night, with St. Kate's coming out on top in the dual against the Cobbers 104-81.
The Wildcats had a fantastic day on Saturday and won all the events except the 400 medley relay. Three of those events were won by sophomore
Alissa Ellingson (Eagan, Minn. / Eagan), bringing her weekend total to five individual wins. The sophomore also clocked three season best times Saturday afternoon, starting with the 200 freestyle. Ellingson dropped two seconds off her previous season best in the 200 freestyle, winning the race with a time of 2:03.24. Then, in the 100 freestyle, the sophomore won her fourth individual race of the weekend with a time of 56.44, three seconds off the school record, and won the 200 breaststroke with a season best time of 2:33.45.
Mary Jane Voss (Mequon, Wis.) continued to be one of St. Kate's top swimmers Saturday afternoon with two individual wins of her own. Voss won the mile in dominating fashion, lapping the competition and winning the race with a time of 18:55.36. The junior also won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:19.61.
Katie Rising (Bismark, N.D. / Century) also took home a pair individual wins in the 200 Individual Medley (IM) and the 200 backstroke. In the 200 IM, Rising clocked a career best time of 2:25.74 en route to winning the race then followed that up with another a near season-best swim in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:17.99.
First year
McKenna Peterson (Cameron Park, Calif. / St. Francis) was the final Wildcat to win multiple events Saturday afternoon. Peterson won the shortest event of the day, the 50 yard freestyle, with a time of 27.34 then went on to win the second longest free style race of the day, the 500 freestyle, with a time of 5:37.34.
In the morning diving meet against UM-Morris, with senior
Jenna Nagy (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. In the 3-meter 11 dives, Nagy just missed breaking her own school record by two points with a 448.35 point performance. She was just as strong in the 1-meter competition, winning by 81 points with a score of 382.70.
The Wildcat divers will return to competition on February 7, when they compete at the Northfield Diving Invite at Carleton College. The swimmers will enjoy three hard weeks of training before competing in the MIAC Swimming and Diving Championships February 16-18. More information about the MIAC Championships, including a preview, will be available in a few weeks.
