Tennis returns to action with two key MIAC match ups

ST. PAUL, MINN. – After 12 days without competition, the St. Catherine University tennis team is ready to retake the court this weekend with two key Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) match ups. On Friday, the Wildcats will host Hamline University at 6:30 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center before taking on Gustavus Adolphus College at the same place at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

St. Kate's is hoping to carry its winning momentum from their spring trip to Orlando, Florida into this weekend's MIAC matches. The Wildcats finished the trip by sweeping Elmhurst College and Hollins University after falling to regionally ranked Carthage and nationally ranked Hampton in their first two matches in the sunshine state.

With the season winding down and the smell of playoffs in the air, here are the five important numbers to know before St. Kate's two MIAC matches this weekend:

7 – Counting the dual matches against the Pipers and Gusties, the Wildcats have seven matches remaining in the regular season. Five of those matches are against MIAC opponents and will impact the Wildcats playoff position. In addition to Hamline and Gustavus, St. Kate's still has Bethel University, Macalester College, and the College of Saint Benedict remaining on the schedule.

6th – The Wildcats are currently tied for sixth in the MIAC standings with Saint Ben's. St. Kate's has a 2-3 record in conference play and is 7-5 overall thanks to their strong performances in Florida. Hamline currently holds the ninth seed in the conference having compiled only one conference win. Gustavus currently sits in third with an undefeated 3-0 MIAC record and 12-6 overall record.

36.5 – The average temperature in St. Paul, Minnesota over the weekend will be approximately 36.5 degrees. The Wildcats were originally scheduled to host both Hamline and Gustavus outside at their home court on St. Kate's campus. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen weather, the Wildcats will have to wait a few more days before they can play a match outside. Both weekend matches were moved indoors to the U of M Baseline Tennis center due to cold temperatures and precipitation.

101 – St. Kate's senior Mikinzee Salo (Brainerd, Minn. / Brainerd) won career dual match 100 against Hollins University on March 23. Salo won her opening doubles match 8-0 for career win 100 then won in straight sets in singles play to win the 101st match of her career. Salo earned MIAC Tennis Athlete-of-the-Week honors for her accomplishment and has now complied an overall dual match record of 101-32 during her time at St. Kate's.

2 – Co-Head Coaches Eric Stacey and Megan Gaard will be coaching against their alma mater this weekend. Both Stacey and Gaard are former Gustie student-athletes.
