Salo named MIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

ST. PAUL, MINN. – No one may have enjoyed their spring break trip more than the St. Catherine University tennis team and Mikinzee Salo (Brainerd, Minn. / Brainerd). The senior finished the week with a 7-1 dual match record while winning the 100 dual match of her career. For her performances in Orlando, Florida, Salo was named Tennis Athlete of the Week by the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) sports information directors on Tuesday.

Salo's impressive play started last Friday in St. Kate's 5-4 win over MIAC opponent Saint Mary's University, when she won both matches at the No. 1 doubles and singles spot. Her play carried over in St. Kate's trip to Florida. Salo earned one of the Wildcats two points against regionally ranked Carthage College in their opening match of the spring trip, winning at the No. 1 doubles spot 8-3. The very next day, Salo continued winning, scoring the Wildcats only two points in a 7-2 loss to No. 40 Hamilton. Salo won at the No. 1 doubles spot 8-2 at No. 1 doubles then rallied from down 0-6 to win 6-4, 10-3 in her singles match.

Salo won all four of her remaining matches in Orlando, helping the Wildcats to two 9-0 sweeps of Elmhurst College and Hollins University. Against Hollins, Salo won her 100 and 101 career dual matches, winning 8-0 in doubles play and 6-0, 6-3 in singles. With the wins, Salo improved her overall collegiate dual match record to 101-32. She is 8-3 in doubles and 7-5 in singles play this season.

Thanks to a successful 2-2 trip in Florida, St. Kate's improved to 7-5 on the year with a 2-3 record in MIAC play. They return to the court on Friday, April 8 for a 4 p.m. match against rival Hamline University.
