Wildcats score 21 runs in sweep of Augsburg

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The St. Catherine University softball team proved once again that they are one of the hottest teams in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). The Wildcats swept Augsburg College at home on Saturday behind a combined 21 runs and 23 hits in two games in just 11 innings of play, winning by scores of 13-1 and 8-0.

St. Kate's was offensively aggressive from the start in game one, scoring three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first. Robyn Rohr (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville North) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Krista Flugstad (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson). With a runner in scoring position and only one out, three-hole hitter Kylie Macziewski (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) delivered an RBI single to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

Megan Lindenfelser (Nowthen, Minn. / Anoka) extended the lead two batters later, hitting a two run blast over the center field wall to give St. Kate's 3-0 lead after one. Starting pitcher Flugstad then went on to hold the Auggies scoreless, preserving the three run lead and the shutout through the first inning and a half.

The first inning proved to be a warm up for the Wildcats, as the offense exploded to score six runs in the second inning. Lindenfelser hit her second home run of the ball game, this time with runners on first and second, to extend St. Kate's lead to 9-0.

Flugstad struck out Augsburg's first two batters and got third basement Jenna Orth to ground out with a runner on first in the top of the third. That inning proved to be Flugstad's last, as fellow sophomore pitcher Kailee Berquam (Kenyon, Minn. / Kenyon-Wanamingo) came in to relieve Flugstad in the top of the fourth. In three innings of work, Flugstad gave up just one hit while striking out five of the 11 Auggies she faced to earn her tenth win of the 2016 season.

Augsburg held the Wildcats scoreless in the bottom of the third, then managed to cut into the 9-0 lead by scoring in the top of the fourth. However, St. Kate's answered with a four run inning of its own behind an RBI walk with the bases loaded walks by Claire Woebke (Bloomington, Minn. / Jefferson) and Donielle Kurvers (Monticello, Minn. / Monticello) and a two out RBI single from Rohr.

Lindenfelser led the Wildcats in hitting in the 13-1 game one victory, going 2-2 with two runs and five RBI. Macziewski also went 2-2 with one run and one RBI, while Rohr went 2-3 with one run and three RBI.

It took St. Kate's a bit longer to score in game two than it did in game one. Augsburg starting pitcher Courtney Larson held the Wildcats to just two hits in the first and second inning in game two. However, St. Kate's was finally able to break through the 0-0 tie in the bottom of the third. Macziewski reached second with one out on a throwing error by the centerfielder then scored the Wildcats first run of game two on an RBI single by Ashley Sis (Brooklyn Park, Minn. / Osseo).

St. Kate's extended their 1-0 lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an RBI double from Rohr and an RBI single by left fielder Brittney Frenette (Columbia Heights, Minn. / Irondale). They added three more runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth, taking game two by a score of 8-0 to sweep the visiting Auggies.

Rohr and Frenette led the team in hitting in game two, combining for six hits and six RBI's. Rohr's leadoff single extended her hit streak to 25 games, which is not only the longest in St. Kate's history, but the longest active hit streak in the MIAC.

Lindenfelser also earned her tenth win of the season in game two, giving up just three hits while striking out eight in the complete game effort.

After sweeping Augsburg, the Wildcats improved to 22-3 on the season with a 9-3 mark in conference play. They will play in one of their biggest MIAC games of the season on Sunday when they hit the road face Hamline University at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
