ResultST. PAUL, MINN. – The St. Catherine University tennis team hit a bit of a bump in their first match of the weekend against St. Cloud State University. The Wildcats fell to the Division II Huskies 7-2 on a blustery Friday at the St. Kate's tennis courts in St. Paul, Minnesota.
St. Kate's took one point in doubles play as
Mikinzee Salo (Brainerd, Minn. / Brainerd) and
Angie Lorenzen (Mitchell, S.D. / Mitchell) won at the No. 1 spot. The two seniors defeated St. Cloud's No. 1 team of Abigail Kantor and Marilia Roque Diversi 8-5 in the first match of the day.
Alicia Knoll (Waseca, Minn. / Waseca) and
Julia Sporer (Rogers, Minn. / Rogers) fell at the No. 2 doubles spot 8-2 while
Jessica Duda (St. Michael, Minn. / St. Michael Albertville) and
Leah Obert (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley) lost at the No. 3 spot 8-6.
Trailing 1-2 after doubles play, the Wildcats were hoping to win back some points during singles play. Salo evened the match at two points apiece by defeating the Huskies El O'Brien 1-6, 6-1, 11-9 at the No. 1 singles spot. Knoll fought at the No. 2 spot but fell in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 while No. 3 Lorenzen lost 6-3, 6-1.
At the No. 4 spot, Duda lost 6-1, 6-3 and Sporer lost at the No. 5 spot by the same score. Obert was competitive at the No. 6 spot, but ultimately lost 7-5, 7-5.
With the loss to St. Cloud, St. Kate's record falls to 8-7 overall and stays 2-3 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play. They will travel to Arden Hills, Minnesota tomorrow for a 10 a.m. match against Bethel University.
