ORLANDO, FLA. – The St. Catherine University tennis team had played some of its best tennis against both the top teams in both the central region and the nation this season. That trend continued Monday, as the Wildcats split their matches, losing to national ranked Hamilton College 7-2 and beating Elmhurst College 9-0.
St. Kate's faced a formidable opponent in their first match of the day against Hamilton College. Â The Continentals are currently tied for 40th in the latest Top 40 rankings released by the International Tennis Association (ITA) on March 17 and are ranked No. 19 in the Northeast region. However, the Wildcats gave Hamilton a run for its money, both in singles and doubles play. In doubles play,
Mikinzee Salo (Brainerd, Minn. / Brainerd) and
Angie Lorenzen (Mitchell, S. D. / Mitchell) defeated Lindsay Jadow and Jane Haffer 8-2 to earn one of two points for the Wildcats in the morning match.
Salo also scored a win for St. Kate's at the No. 1 singles spot. After losing the first set 6-0, the senior rallied to beat Haffer 6-4 in the second set and 10-3 in the tiebreaker. Lorenzen nearly scored points for the Wildcats in her singles matches as well. Like Salo, Lorenzen rallied from down a set to win the second and force a tiebreaker, but ultimately fell to the Continentals Winnie Tang 1-6, 7-6, 10-7.
St. Kate's rebounded in their second match of the day, beating Elmhurst 9-0 without dropping a single set. The Wildcats soundly won all three doubles matches to open the dual against the Bluejays. Salo and Lorenzen won their third consecutive doubles match with a 8-4 victory over Ava Kolman and Rachel Rettger, while new doubles team of
Alicia Knoll (Waseca, Minn. / Waseca) and
Julia Sporer (Rogers, Minn. / Rogers) defeated Hannah Vaselany and Chiara Gaudio by the same score at the No. 2 spot. No. 3 doubles team of
Jessica Duda (St. Michael, Minn. / St. Michael-Albertville) also earned a win, beating Elmhurst's Tori Liewergen and Camile Knapik-Balch 8-2.
St. Kate's was just as sound in singles play, as they went on to win all six matches without dropping a set. Salo continued to look impressive with a 6-3, 6—2 straight set win over Kolman at the No. 1 singles spot, while Knoll notched her first singles win in Florida, beating Gaudio 7-5, 6-1. No. 3 player Lorezen won by a similar score of 7-5, 6-2, and Duda won 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 5 spot.
Sporer and Obert also collected straight set wins in their singles matches. Sporer defeated Liewergen 6-3, 6-2 to score for the Wildcats, while Obert defeated Brittany Kuehn 6-1, 6-2 to seal St. Kate's 9-0 win.
With the split, the Wildcats are now 6-5 overall and remain 2-3 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. St. Kate's will have tomorrow off before playing their final match in Florida on Wednesday when they face Hollins University.Â
