Tennis suffers first loss of 2016 against Carleton

Results

LAKEVILLE, MINN. – The St. Catherine University tennis went into their Sunday match against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponent Carleton College with a hot hand after opening the season with four straight wins. Unfortunately, the Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season, losing 9-0 to the Knights at Lifetime Fitness, in Lakeville, Minnesota.

St. Kate's went into the match hoping to avenge their loss to Carleton from last season. Unfortunately, the Wildcats found themselves in a quick 3-0 whole after doubles play. No. 3 doubles team of Ruth Rike (Pine City, Minn. / Pine City) and Julia Sporer (Rogers, Minn. / Rogers) fell 8-1 to the Knights Alana Danieu and Danielle Vasiliev. Then, No. 1 doubles team Mikinzee Salo (Brainerd, Minn. / Brainerd) and Angie Lorenzen (Mitchell, S.D. / Mitchell) and No. 2 team Alicia Knoll (Waseca, Minn. / Waseca) and Jessica Duda (St. Michael, Minn. / St. Michael-Albertville) fell in their doubles matches by scores of 8-4 and 8-5.

St. Kate's was hoping to cut into Carleton's leads with wins in singles play, but the Knights proved to be too much. Sporer, Duda, Lorenzen, Knoll, and first year Leah Obert (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley) all fought hard in their respective matches, but fell in straight sets. Salo managed to take one set from her Carleton opponent, No. 1 singles player Vasiliev, before falling in the tiebreaker set 10-8.

After two matches this week, the Wildcats get four days off before their return to the court against MIAC foe St. Olaf. The Oles have eliminated St. Kate's from the MIAC playoffs the last two years, the the Wildcats look to avenge those losses this Friday. The match will start at 8 p.m. at the U of M Baseline Tennis Center.
