ResultsMINNEAPOLIS, MINN. - The St. Catherine University tennis team is off to an impressive start in 2016. After beating Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) foe Concordia 9-0 last weekend, the Wildcats defeated nonconference opponent Martin Luther in the same fashion Friday night. St. Kate's defeated their nonconference opponent 9-0 in under two hours, to earn their fourth straight win of the season.
The Wildcats got off to a quick start in the doubles portion of the match at the U of M Baseline Tennis Courts. All three of St. Kate's doubles teams walked off the courts with wins, helped the Wildcats take a 3-0 lead over their opponent after doubles play. No. 1 doubles team
Mikinzee Salo (Brainerd, Minn. / Brainerd) and
Angie Lorenzen kicked things off with an 8-1 victory over Martin Luther's No. 1 team of Acacia Foss and Charis Goelzer. St. Kate's No. 2 doubles team of
Alicia Knoll (Waseca, Minn. / Waseca) and
Jessica Duda (St. Michael, Minn. / St. Michael-Albertville) also won in decisive 8-1 fashion over their opponents Mateja Epple and Laura Schoenherr.
Julia Sporer (Rogers, Minn. / Rogers) and
Ruth Rike (Pine City, Minn. / Pine City) played in the closest doubles match of the evening and came out on top 8-2.
Singles play was similar to doubles play, with the Wildcats taking control from the beginning. All six. St. Kate's singles players won in straight sets, as no tiebreakers were needed to determine the winner in singles play. Knoll, Lorenzen, and first year
Leah Obert (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley) all won by a score of 6-0, 6-0. Salo and Sporer won 6-0, 6-1, and Duda defeated her opponent by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
With the win, the Wildcats are now 4-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play. They return to the court Sunday, when they travel to Lakeville to play MIAC rival Carleton College. Last season, St. Kate's lost to the Knights 5-4 in the final match of the day. The Wildcats quest for revenge begins at 2 p.m.at Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville, Minnesota.
