Soccer returns home Saturday for crucial MIAC game

ST. PAUL, MINN. – Though the regular season is winding down, the hunt for a spot in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) playoffs is just heating up for the St. Catherine University soccer team. The Wildcats are in a hunt for one of six coveted spots in the conference tournament and have three games remaining on the schedule to move up the MIAC rankings. After facing regionally ranked Augsburg College Thursday night, St. Kate's will play yet another formidable opponent at home on Saturday: the reigning MIAC Postseason Champion Gustavus Adolphus College.

Saturday's match up between the Gusties and Wildcats is a huge game for both teams. After a 3-1 loss to the Auggies on Thursday, St. Kate's remains tied with Saint Ben's for fourth place in the conference with 13 points. Just one place behind them in the conference standings is none other than Gustavus, who, after starting the season slow, has won three of its last four games.

However, Saturday is more than just a big-time MIAC game. It is also a day where the Wildcats will honor their senior class, which is one of the most successful in program history. St. Kate's six seniors have quite the resume with an overall career record of 35-30-3. They also set a program record in overall and conference wins as juniors in 2015 and led the team to its first MIAC postseason appearance in program history.

So, with Saturday drawing near, here are the numbers to know before the Wildcats take on the Gusties:

337 – In their four years with St. Kate's, the seniors have played in 337 games and made 200 starts. They've compiled a 35-30-3 overall record and have helped the Wildcats grow into one of the top teams in the MIAC.

5 – Senior defender Allie Boucher (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater) has started all but five games in her career with St. Kate's. As a junior in 2015, Boucher led the team in minutes played, with 19 starts in 19 games and was second in minutes played as a sophomore with 14 starts in 14 games.

2 – Anna Pedersen (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater) and Boucher are two-time Academic All-MIAC honorees, having earned the honor both their sophomore (2014) and junior (2015) seasons. Fellow senior Kelly Molitor (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville South) earned the honor in 2015 and Julia Zyla (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Trinity) was named Academic All-MIAC as a sophomore in 2014.

4 – At least four Wildcat seniors will end their careers in the record book. Zyla and Boucher are No. 7 and 8 all-time at St. Kate's in career assists and Molitor is currently No. 15 all-time in the same category. Hannah Okerstrom (Bayport, Minn. / Stillwater) will end her career at St. Kate's as one of the most successful players in program history. She currently stands second in career points (69) and goals (31) and holds two other school records.

2 Gabby Scundi (Maplewood, Minn. / Hill-Murray) has scored two goals in her career at St. Kate's. Both of them have been game winners.

Bonus Number:

28 – With her goal against Augsburg on Thursday, Okerstrom tied her own school record for points in a single season with 28. Okerstrom leads the team in all offensive categories and is second in the MIAC in points (28) and goals (12) this season.
