Wildcats can't get offense going in 1-0 loss to Concordia

The St. Catherine University hockey team had been hoping to find its scoring touch in its next Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) series after coming up a bit short last week. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case as the Wildcats suffered a tough 1-0 setback at the hands of Concordia College Friday evening in Moorhead, Minnesota.

"We're still looking for a team identity, what we're going to be known for" said Head Coach Brad Marshall. "Right now, other teams see us as strong defensively, but one or two goals will get them a win. We need a more disciplined, work hard, grind it out mentality."

Defense was again the Wildcats' ticket Friday night as they allowed just one goal to the Cobbers who peppered Kristen Pechacek (Park Falls, Wis./Chequamegon) in goal. For the second time this season, Pechacek recorded a career-high 42 saves to give the Wildcats a fighting chance.

The game opened up with a scoreless first period, but the Wildcats managed just five shots to the Cobbers' 16. Then, in the second period, the Cobbers continued to bring the pressure until they finally beat Pechacek on a goal to Ellen Rethwisch at the 18:46 mark.

The Cobbers continued to pressure in the third outshooting the Wildcats 12-3 before picking up their third-straight MIAC win. With the loss the Wildcats fall to 0-4-2 on the season and 0-3-0 in the MIAC.

Leading the way offensively for the Wildcats were Natalie West (Appleton, Wis./Appleton West) and Zoe Verkerke (Menominee, Mich./Menominee) who each picked up two shots on goal.

The Wildcats will have a chance to reverse Friday's result as they remain in Moorhead Saturday for another MIAC matchup with the Cobbers set to begin at 2 p.m.
