The St. Catherine University track and field team has had a solid outdoor season thus far in 2014 and hoped to close out the year with another strong set of performances at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Championships. Highlighted by a school-record performance from
Jorden Priebe (Indianola, Iowa) in the hammer throw, the Wildcats started out their final meet in impressive fashion Friday at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.
Early in the season, Priebe had a personal record (PR) throw of 45.02 meters in the hammer throw that was just off of Julie Mareck's school record mark of 45.83 meters. But Priebe finally matched her throw from nearly a month ago when she tossed 45.97 meters in the prelims to break Mareck's record an qualify for the finals heat. The senior then closed out her career with a All-MIAC Honorable Mention finish in fifth-place with a mark of 46.24 meters to score the Wildcats' biggest points of the day. This also marked the second-consecutive year that Priebe made the finals in the event at the MIAC Championships.
Another senior had a memorable appearance in her final conference meet as
Kristina Poss (Shoreview, Minn.) earned All-MIAC Honorable Mention with a sixth-place finish in the 10,000-meter run. Throughout her collegiate career, Poss has been consistently strong for the Wildcats but saved her best for last as her time of 38:47.14 was over 35 seconds from her previous best to remain No. 3 all-time at St. Kate's. This was Poss' top finish in any event during her four years as a Wildcat and her first point-scoring outing in track and field.
Sarah Manning (Page, Ariz.) was the final point scorer of the day for the Wildcats as she cleared a height of 1.55 meters to tie for eighth overall in a talented field of competitors in the high jump. The junior's jump was just off her season-best mark of 1.56 meters and was her third-consecutive top-eight finish at the outdoor conference meet in the event.
In the prelim sprint events,
Shakeela Wells-Johnson (St. Paul, Minn.) and
Brittany Moore (Maplewood, Minn.) both qualified for Saturday's finals in their respective events. In the 100-meter dash, Wells-Johnson's time of 12.58 was the seventh-best time of the day and justt off of her season and personal-best time. In the hurdles, Moore clocked the sixth-fastetst time in the prelims at 15.63 which was also just off of her season and personal-best time.
The Wildcat 4 x100-meter relay squad of Moore,
Madelin Skaalrud (Hammond, Wis.),
Ashleigh Ackley (Gilby, N.D.) and Wells-Johnson ran the sixth-best time of the day at 50.92 to qualify for Saturday's final. Ackley also had a PR time of 17.27 in the 100-meter hurdles.
Other notable performances from the opening day of competition at St. Olaf came in the 400-meter hurdles.
Shannon Strickland (Rochester, Minn.) had a PR time of 75.25, while
Sarah Howe (Siren, Wis.) concluded her collegiate track career with a time of 72.26 that was just off her PR.
After the first day, the Wildcats are ninth in the team standings with. 7.3 points. The remainder of the MIAC meet including finals in the remaining track events will take place Saturday with field events starting at 12 p.m. and track events beginning at 1 p.m. Additional information can be found on the
