Since defeating Hamline University a week ago in an overtime thriller, the St. Catherine University soccer team hoped it could get back on the winning track against a tough Augsburg College squad. Despite tying up the game with 10 minutes to play, the Wildcats couldn't hold off one of the top players in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) in Olivia Muyres who gave the Auggies a 2-1 win Saturday in St. Paul.
The Auggies got on the board early when Muyres netted her eighth goal of the season and 39th career goal to set a new Augsburg record just 5:30 into the game. The Wildcats then continued to pressure throughout the first and second half which included three shots that hit the goal post.
Finally, in the final minutes of the second half, the Auggies committed a foul in the box to set up a penalty kick in favor of the Wildcats. Senior
Nina Bukowski (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) tied the game for the Wildcats when she beat her younger sister Lucy Bukowski in goal tallying her first goal of the season at the 79:39 mark.
Unfortunately, Muyres wasn't done making her mark on the MIAC contest when she buried a lose ball to lift the Auggies to a 2-1 decision over the Wildcats.
The shot and corner kick opportunities were nearly even as the Wildcats held a 13-12 advantage over the Auggies in shots, while Augsburg has a 5-4 advantage over the Wildcats in corners.
Danielle Mendez (Bloomington, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) recorded two saves in the game, while Bukowski led the Wildcats with four shots in the game.
Ellen Kokes (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson),
Elly Leyva (San Jacinto, Calif./San Jacinto) and
Hannah Okerstrom (Bayport, Minn./Stillwater) each recorded two shots.
Hannah Brown (Burnsville, Minn./Lakeville South) and
Julia Zyla (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Trinity School at River Ridge) each tallied a shot on goal.
The Wildcats return to action Wednesday for a non-conference match up with Simpson College, again in front of a home crowd. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
