Box Score After picking up a big non-conference win over then regionally-ranked University of Dubuque, the St. Catherine University soccer team looked to continue on the path of victory against another Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) foe on the road.
Fortunately for the Wildcats, they were able to find some late-game heroics to break a scoreless tie against Simpson College when
Elly Leyva (San Jacinto, Calif.) found the back of the net in the first minute of overtime to lift the Wildcats to victory Wednesday afternoon in Indianola, Iowa.
Despite being outshot 14 to 9, the Wildcats were able to take advantage of their four shots on goal to pick up their second-straight win against an IIAC team before returning to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play this weekend.
Leyva – who earned All-MIAC Honorable Mention honors and was named the Wildcat Rookie of the Year last year – finally ended her scoring draught for her sophomore campaign when she beat Simpson goalie Stephanie Cox to end the game. Leyva led the Wildcats in shots on goal with two, while
Grace Lowry (Minneapolis, Minn.) and
Allison Hawkins (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) each recorded one.
Goalkeeper
Danielle Mendez (Bloomington, Minn.) continued her strong play in goal for the Wildcats as she came up with five saves to record her second-straight shutout.
With the win, the Wildcats surpass the .500 mark for the season to improve to 4-3. The Wildcats resume Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play Saturday as they travel across town to take on Hamline University at 1 p.m.
