Wildcat hockey suffers second-straight loss to St. Scholastica

Mallory Ryan
Box Score
After suffering a close 2-1 non-conference setback against the College of St. Scholastica just three days ago, the St. Catherine University hockey team hoped to come up with a win in what guaranteed to be another close rematch.

Unfortunately, the Saints used home ice to their advantage and handed the Wildcats a 4-1 non-conference setback, Tuesday evening at Mars Arena in Duluth, Minn.

"We played much harder than we did on Saturday," said Head Coach Brad Marshall. "It wasn't a (lack of) effort tonight. We had a few mental breakdowns and focus issues."

Despite outshooting its opponent 26-22, St. Catherine couldn't find an answer for the solid play of St. Scholastica goaltender Tereysa White or the team's high-powered offense.

The Saints took the game's first lead near the end of the first period as Michelle Reback beat Wildcat goalie Samantha Geissler (Elk River, Minn.).

The Wildcats bounced back 14 seconds later as Mallory Ryan (Cottage Grove, Minn.) buried a pass from Shelby Salmonsen (Faribault, Minn.) to tie the game at one a piece heading into the second period.

The Saints would use a late second-period goal from Nikki Logergren to take a 2-1 lead that they would never surrender to the Wildcats.

A goal at the 13-minute mark in the third from Gina Dodge would put a Wildcat comeback out of reach. With just over a minute to play in regulation, Alex Blair would add a power play goal to seal the win for the Saints and hand the Wildcats their fifth loss of the 2012-13 season.

Ryan, the lone Wildcat goal scorer, now has five points in her first season as a Wildcat and is tied for fifth in scoring.

Geissler had 18 saves on the night, while Becky Clifton (Imperial, Mo.), Randi Fabsits (Tinley Park, Ill.) and Megan Killmer (Savage, Minn.) each had four shots on goal.

The Wildcats look to rebound with a win against Concordia University Wisconsin in their final non-conference contest of the season, Saturday at Drake Arena at 4 p.m.
