The St. Catherine University basketball team headed into 2013 looking for its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) win of the season against an Augsburg College squad that was just 1-5 in conference play.

Despite holding a four-point lead at the midpoint of the first half, the Wildcats couldn't shut down the high-powered Auggie offense and suffered a tough 74-48 loss Wednesday evening at the Butler Center.

The Wildcats were able to hold Augsburg to just 36 percent from the field in the first half. Unfortunately, the Auggies found a way to recover and finished the second half with 57 percent shooting and 6-of-11 from 3-point range.

After back-and-forth play early, the Wildcats used a 10-2 run to take an 18-12 lead with 8:02 to play in the first. Augsburg was able to regain momentum though as they went on an 11-1 run to finish the half up 25-21.

The Auggies never looked back in the second half as they pressed the Wildcat offense and forced 15 second-half St. Catherine turnovers.

Sarah Mong (Page, Ariz.) was at her best despite the loss as she went 7-for-9 shooting for a game-high 18 points, while Mary Neumann (Duluth, Minn.) turned in her second-straight double-digit performance with 10 points. The sophomore went 2-for-5 from behind the arc and also had a team-high three steals.

First-year Paige Marquez (Sugarland, Texas) scored nine points off the bench for the Wildcats and shot 3-for-5 on the night, while Cynthia Cowan (Elgin, Texas) was the game's leading rebounder with six boards.

Abbey Luger and Brittany Zins each scored 11 points to lead the Auggies, while three of their teammates scored seven points to help lift Augsburg to its second MIAC victory of the season.

With the loss, the Wildats fall to 1-8 on the season and 0-6 in the MIAC. They travel to the College of Saint Benedict Saturday afternoon for the first of three-straight road games. Tip off is scheduled for 3 p.m. in St. Joseph, Minn.
