Sharp-shooting No. 9 Tommies too much for Wildcats in MIAC loss

Mong was 3-for-5 vs. UST
Box Score
The St. Catherine University basketball team knew it would have a tough Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) test against league-leading, No. 9 University of St. Thomas and would need to have a great shooting day to have a chance at a win.

Unfortunately, the Wildcats were unable to knock down the shots they needed as the Tommies handed them a 76-41 loss, Saturday afternoon at Schoenecker Arena in St. Paul.

The sharp-shooting Tommies, who have been shooting over 45 percent from the field all season, kept on pace with a 50 percent shooting day, despite a strong defensive effort from the Wildcats.

As a team, the Wildcats allowed the Tommies just 10 offensive rebounds – one of their lowest totals of the season. The Wildcats were unable, though, to capitalize on their own offensive opportunities as the Tommies handed them a tough MIAC loss.

Sarina Baker (Plymouth, Minn.) had her third-straight double digit game and her best statistical performance since the holiday break. The sophomore scored a game-high 15 points and led the Wildcats in rebounds (8) and steals (3). Baker is now averaging 11.7 ppg, which is the 11th-most in the MIAC this season.

Kristen Lee (Dawson, Minn.) had the second highest scoring game for the Wildcats with seven points, while Sarah Mong (Page, Ariz.) and Cynthia Cowan (Elgin, Texas) each had six. Mong was 3-for-5 from the field, while Lee added four rebounds in the Wildcat effort.

Carley Emery scored 13 points to lead the Tommie offense, while four other players chipped in eight points a piece.

The Wildcats return to action Monday night against a Macalester College squad that has been on a seven-game losing streak and is just 3-9 in MIAC play. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Leonard Center in St. Paul.
