After a strong 3-0 start to the 2012season, the St. Catherine University soccer team knew facing a regionally-ranked Wartburg College team less than a week before Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play begins would be a difficult task.

The Wildcats appeared ready for the challenge, but their effort fell short as the team picked up its first loss of the season in a 6-0 decision on Friday evening.

“Things just didn't work today, simple as that ,” said Head Coach Chris Citowicki. “The organization and communication we normally have was gone and against a good team like Wartburg, you pay the price.”

The Knights took control of the game in the first half, scoring in the 19th minute, and they never looked back. They capitalized on two penalty kicks in the first 45, outshot the Wildcats 21-6 and had 13 corner kicks throughout the contest to put a Wildcat comeback out of reach.

The Wildcats didn't go down without a fight, though. First-year goalkeeper Danielle Mendez (Bloomington, Minn.) recorded nine saves on the evening and came up with a number of big defensive stops to prevent the Knights from extending their lead even further.

Lensa Gurmessa (Minneapolis, Minn.) also recorded two shots on goal to lead the Wildcats' offensive strike.

“The credit goes to Wartburg for putting away their chances and giving us a wake up call before MIAC games start next week,” saind Citowicki.

The Wildcats have a chance for redemption and to get back on a winning track next week, but it won't be an easy task as they will face another set of Knights in their first MIAC contest of the season. The team will travel to Northfield, Minn., to take on a Carleton team that is currently ranked third in the North region, on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 4 p.m.
