The ability to take a volleyball match to five sets says a lot about a team's character and its ability to continue battling after being down. Recently, the St. Catherine University volleyball team has proven that it has a strong character and is able to battle with the best.

Unfortunately though, the Wildcats have continued to find themselves on the losing end as they have dropped their last three matches in five sets, including a 3-2 setback  to Concordia, Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats found themselves in their second-straight Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference  (MIAC) five-setter on their home turf against a tough Cobber team that has been at the top of the MIAC in recent years.

In the first set, the Wildcats appeared to come out with fire as they took down the Cobbers 25-21. The Wildcats used a .326 team attacking percentage and 18 kills to go up 1-0 over Concordia early in the match.

The tides quickly changed though, as the Cobbers forced the Wildcats to make attacking errors and took the second and third sets by scores of 25-16 and 25-15, respectively.

However, the Wildcats weren't ready to give up as they continued to fight hard for every point and appeared to find their rhythm in the fourth set. As a team they hit .290, had 13 kills and won 25-18 to even the match at two a piece.

Despite battling back after two less-than-stellar sets to win take the fourth, the momentum died down for the Wildcats and they couldn't manage to pull off the win as the Cobbers won the match with a 15-10 fifth-set win.

Leading the way for the Wildcats offensively was senior Brittni Wangerin (Prior Lake, Minn.) as she put up 17 kills, 19 digs, two block assists and a service ace on the day. Fellow senior Kelsey Wirtanen (Hibbing, Minn.) also had a strong day with 11 kills, 20 digs, one assist and one ace.

Jordyn Wentland (Blaine, Minn.) led the Wildcats in assists (25) and also recorded eight digs and three aces. Nicole Pothen (LeSueur, Minn.) led the Wildcats defensively with 28 digs, while Marie O'Neil (St. Michael, Minn.) had the best day serving with a match-high five aces.

With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 7-8 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.

The Wildcats return to action and hope to avoid another five-set loss as they take on Augsburg on Wednesday, Sept. 26, in a 7 p.m. home contest.
