Heading into Wednesday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) contest against St. Olaf College, the St. Catherine University basketball team had an opportunity to find its first conference win against an Ole squad that was also winless in the MIAC.
Unfortunately, the young Wildcat squad couldn't handle a tough Ole defensive front and suffered a 72-38 MIAC road loss, Wednesday evening in Northfield, Minn.
After the Wildcats opened up the game with a quick 8-3 lead, the Ole defense created opportunities that led to a 35-4 run to close out the first half.
The Wildcats were staring at a 40-12 deficit heading into the second half, but showed some fight as
Sarina Baker (Plymouth, Minn.) and
Kristen Lee (Dawson, Minn.) hit consecutive 3-pointers to open with a 6-0 Wildcat run.
The Oles would quickly regain control to add to their lead with a 19-3 run to make it 59-21 with 8:18 to play.
Sarah Mong (Page, Ariz.) continued her impressive early season play and found her way through a big Ole defense to fuel a 9-2 Wildcat run. The sophomore scored six quick points in just three minutes to cut the Ole lead just a bit with 4:37 to play.
Despite the Wildcats' late-game attempt to comeback from an early deficit, the Oles continued to capitalize on Wildcat turnovers and used an 11-8 run to seal the win.
Mong was the leading Wildcat scorer with 10 points and had a team-best three steals. She finished the night with a full stat line as she also added four rebounds, one block and one assist.
Cynthia Cowan (Elgin, Texas) had a team-high seven boards and added six points, two assists, one block and one steal.
Baker finished the night as the second-leading Wildcat scorer with eight points, while Lee was 2-for-5 from the 3-point line. The junior contributed seven points, two rebounds, two assists and a block in the tough Wildcat loss.
The Oles were led by the strong play of Nikki Frogner and Kim Cerjan who had 13 and 10 points, respectively.
The Wildcats fall to 1-5 on the season and will face a tough Concordia College squad in its final game before the holiday break, Saturday, Dec. 8. Tip off at the
Butler Center is scheduled for 3 p.m.
