After a big first day at the UW-Platteville Invite, the St. Catherine University volleyball team was looking for a good second day heading into the tail end of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) season.

The Wildcats finished strong with a 3-2 win over Coe College after falling in straight sets to UW-Platteville in the first match to finish 3-1 Saturday.

“(We) had set point in the first after being up by six,” said Head Coach Corey Phelps about the loss. “We lost our drive and energy and then rallied to beat Coe in five. (Going) 3-1 is a good showing for us.”

The first match of the day was a departure from the strong service game the Wildcats had Friday night and struggled to hit consistently as a team against UW-Platteville, losing in three (24-26, 21-25, 14-25).

Stephanie Meschke (Faribault, Minn.) was the star against UW-Platteville recording 11 kills, three digs and three block assists. Nicole Pothen (Faribault, Minn.) recorded 25 digs to lead the Wildcats defensively.

The Wildcats found a way to rebound after the loss and fought to a huge five-set win over Coe (25-20, 12-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-11). Seven different Wildcats had kills against the Kohawks and had 11 blocks as a team.

Marie O'Neil (St. Michael, Minn.) led the Wildcats in blocking with three solo and three block assists in the match, while Meschke had one solo and one assist. O'Neil was also the St. Catherine representative on the All-Tournament team.

Brittni Wangerin (Prior Lake, Minn.) finished the match with 10 kills, 15 digs and one ace for a daily total of 16 kills, 26 digs and one ace. She finished the weekend with 46 kills, 37 digs and five aces.

Meschke again led the Wildcats on the day with 18 kills, eight digs, a solo block and four block assists. She finished the weekend with 40 kills and 14 digs to lead the Wildcat offense.

Jordyn Wentland (Blaine, Minn.) had a huge second day recording 28 assists, one kill, nine digs and two aces. She led the Wildcats with 62 assists on the weekend. Pothen finished the weekend with 93 digs through four matches.

The Wildcats return to action against Saint Benedict on Wednesday, for a 7 p.m., MIAC match.
