After a huge win over Macalester College on senior night Friday, the St. Catherine University volleyball team was hoping to send its six seniors off in a big way in its two final matches, Saturday at Northwestern College in Roseville, Minn.
The Wildcats managed to finish off Crown College for the second time this season 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-19), before falling 3-1 (25-15, 21-25, 25-22, 25-20) to regionally-ranked Northwestern College to finish the day 1-1.
The underclass players stepped up in a big way to help send the seniors off on a positive note. First-year middle blocker
Zoe Barr (River Falls, Wis.) had a career day as she finished with 17 kills, four digs and three total blocks through two matches. She hit .611 against Crown and had a match-high 11 kills.
First-year
Dani Breault (Anoka, Minn.) also stepped up in a big way as she hit .533 and recorded eight kills, two digs and a block assist against Crown.
Sophomore
Marnie Gubash (Blaine, Minn.) came up big defensively at libero for the Wildcats, recording a match-high 11 digs. She also had two of the team's six service aces against Crown.
In the second match of the day, seniors
Brittni Wangerin (Prior Lake, Minn.) and
Nicole Pothen (Faribault, Minn.) showed why they have been valuable members of the Wildcat squad for the last four years. Wangerin had a team-high 11 kills in the Northwestern loss, while Pothen recorded a team-best 21 digs.
Wangerin finished the match with 11 digs, recording her 15th double-double match of the season. The outside hitter wrapped up her career as a Wildcat third all-time in kills (1,022), second all-time in service aces (121) and fifth all-time in digs (1,065).
Pothen finished her senior campaign with 632 digs, which is second-most in a season in Wildcat history. In just three seasons competing as a Wildcat, Pothen compiled 1,150 digs in her career, putting her fourth all-time at St. Catherine.
Senior
Marie O'Neil (St. Michael, Minn) finished the day with 10 kills and three total blocks to close out her stellar collegiate career. She finishes the season with 94 blocks, which is second-most at St. Catherine. The middle blocker also finished third in career blocks (224) and seventh in career kills (587).
Stephanie Meschke (Faribault, Minn.) compiled 13 kills on her final day in a Wildcat uniform and finishes her season with 296 kills, which is sixth in Wildcat single-season history. The versatile outside hitter finishes fifth in career kills (767) and ninth in career blocks (119).
In just two seasons as a Wildcat, senior
Kelsey Wirtanen (Hibbing, Minn.) finishes her career ninth all-time in single-season digs (360), adding 14 to her 2012 total on the Wildcats' final day of competition.
Ashley Crapser (Becker, Minn.), a key role-player for the Wildcats, ended her career with four digs and a service ace in the team's final three matches of the season.
The Wildcats finished their 2012 campaign 15-18 and 4-7 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC).
