Wildcats fall in home opener

Hosting the first game of a weekend packed full of soccer action on the St. Kate's campus, the Wildcats lost to the Simpson Storm 2-0.  They return to the turf tomorrow in search of their first win of the season, taking on UW La Crosse at 1 pm.

With the Wildcat defense a bit disorganized to start the game, the Storm were able to capitalize early, as Nicole Dillenberg scored off a blocked shot five minutes into the game.  The Wildcats narrowly missed getting the equalized midway through the half, as Brianna Coulter clanged a shot off the crossbar.  Dillenberg added a second goal in the second half.

St. Kate's has yet to find their scoring touch at this early phase of the season, but the team is generating plenty of chances.  The Wildcats held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks, but could not convert on any of those opportunities through the swarming Storm defense.  They outshot the Storm 16-15.

First-year keeper Abbey Hinton had a solid day in net for the Wildcats, stopping eight shots, while Storm keeper Megan Petersen had five saves.

Coach Citowicki was encouraged by the turnaround he saw from the teams' first game against Luther to today.  "We moved the ball well and created some good chances. Overall we played some great soccer, but unlike Simpson, we didn't capitalize on our opportunities. The first goal came from a scramble in which we should have done better clearing, but their second goal was a great strike. It's coming together for us, slowly but surly we're starting to click."
