St. Ben's defeats Volleyball on Dig Pink night

The 13-6 Blazers were greeted by a sea of pink on Tuesday night as the Wildcats honored breast cancer survivors on Dig Pink night in Butler gymnasium.  With the Wildcats decked out in their pink jerseys and plenty of fans in the stands sporting pink as well, the Wildcats took to the floor to try and knock the Blazers out of their tie for first in the conference.  While the Wildcats made the Blazers work for every point, it was not quite enough as they fell in three sets, 17-25, 25-27, 27-29.

Despite all the positive energy coming from the stands, the Wildcats started the first set a little flat, and gave the Blazers an early lead.  Although St. Kate's picked up their play, St. Ben's took the first set 25-17.  The Wildcats got some momentum going their way in the second set and kept the game close, but St. Ben's Chelsie Sobieck scored the final two points of the set to give the Blazers a 27-25 win.

It looked like St. Ben's would make a clean sweep in the third as they were up 21-17, but St. Kate's scored five straight points to make it 22-21.  From there, the teams kept trading points, with neither team able to string two points together.  Brittni Wangerin had a couple of key kills to stave off match point, but a few ill-timed service errors allowed St. Ben's to serve for the match and they ended it 29-27 on a kill by Lexi Alm.

Nicole Pothen and Brittni Wangerin both had 16 digs and Wangerin also had 15 kills to lead the team.  Ashley Kahlow had 24 assists and three aces.

The Wildcats are now 13-9 on the season (2-5 MIAC). St. Ben's moves into first place in the MIAC at 6-1 in the conference, 14-6 overall.  The Wildcats next travel to Superior, Wisconsin this weekend for a tournament.
