The Wildcat soccer team picked up another win on a sunny Wednesday afternoon in Saint Paul, as they defeated the visiting Hamline Pipers by a score of 3-2.
Lensa Gurmessa and
Kristi Thorwick each had a goal and an assist to lead the team. The win was the fourth in a row for the Wildcats, who moved to 6-2-1 on the season (2-1 MIAC) with the victory. Hamline fell to 3-6 (0-4 MIAC) with the loss.
The scoring touch of the Wildcats was in full swing in the first half, as they took a 3-0 lead after the opening frame. Thorwick scored off a beautiful cross from
Sam Levercom just four minutes into the contest to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 advantage.
Katie Eckman then made it 2-0 off an assist from Gurmessa. Just a few minutes later,
Kelsey Nistler and Thorwick fed the ball to Gurmessa, who headed it into the goal for her fourth goal of the season.
Holding a 3-0 advantage, the Wildcats were content to hold their ground in the second half, but Hamline had other ideas. Courtney McMoore scored several minutes past halftime to get the Pipers on the board. Liz Spielman added a goal with less than ten minutes remaining, and although the Pipers had several outstanding chances, the Wildcats hung on for a 3-2 win.
The Wildcats host Augsburg College on Saturday, October 2 at 1 pm in conference action.
