Soccer ties Clarke in finale of Wildcat Invitational

Returning to the field less than 24 hours after their last game, the Wildcats squared off against Clarke University Sunday morning to try and determine a winner of the Wildcat Invitational.  Ninety minutes of regulation and two overtime periods turned out not to be enough, as the Crusaders and Wildcats battled to a 1-1 tie.  The Wildcats are now 2-1-1 on the season and Clarke is 3-1-1.

The two squads were evenly matched, with play going back and forth for much of the first half.  Both teams had their scoring opportunities, but the goaltenders turned all the shots away.  Heading into the second half, the teams continued to battle back and forth until Clarke struck first on a goal by Abbigail Willich.  The Wildcats would not back down, and evened the score on a beautiful play by Sam Levercom, who beat a defender and found the net just inside the far post.

Heading into overtime, the teams kept up the intensity.  Clarke sent a shot just outside the post, and the Wildcats headed a corner kick just over the crossbar.  The extra twenty minutes was not enough to determine a winner and the game ended at 1-1.

Coach Bellis said, " While it would have been nice to come away with a win today, we played a great weekend of soccer."  The team is looking forward to opening up conference play on Tuesday when they host St. Thomas in a 4 pm contest.
