Wildcats shutout Saints for MIAC road win

DULUTH, Minn. — The St. Catherine University soccer team earned a 2-0 MIAC road victory over the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday afternoon at Kenny Harkins Field. The win moved the Wildcats to 7-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play.

St. Catherine broke through late in the opening half when Alyssa Hamlin found the back of the net in the 39th minute. Ari Douvier picked up the assist on Hamlin's first goal of the season, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.

The Wildcats added to their lead early in the second half. In the 54th minute, Emily Olson scored her second goal of the season to extend the St. Kate's advantage to 2-0.

St. Catherine generated consistent pressure throughout the match, finishing with a 13-8 advantage in shots and putting 11 attempts on goal. The Wildcats increased their attacking pressure after halftime, recording eight of their 13 shots in the second period.

Hamlin and Olson each finished with two shots and a goal, while Lydia Benson recorded three shots, all on target. Douvier added an assist and put her lone shot on goal.

Defensively, the Wildcats kept the Saints off the scoreboard for the full 90 minutes. Brianna Valdez made two saves in goal to earn the shutout victory. St. Scholastica finished with eight total shots, while the Wildcat defense limited the Saints to just three attempts in the second half.

St. Kate's is home on Saturday, October 10 hosting Saint Mary's University at 1 pm.
