The St. Kate's softball team opened MIAC play for the 2010 season by hosting Augsburg College. The Wildcats dropped both games of the doubleheader, falling in game one 5-0 and 11-4 in game two.
Despite only having one less hit than the Auggies in game one, the Wildcats were never able to capitalize on their scoring opportunities.
After two scoreless innings Augsburg used a home run, a triple and an error to put three runs on the board. They added two more in the sixth to make it 5-0.
Kaitlyn Frank went 3-for-3 and
Kelsey Luedtke went 2-for-2 in game one.
The second game started off with Augsburg taking a commanding 6-0 lead after four innings. Then in the bottom of the fourth SCU pushed across a pair of runs during a two out rally.
Ashley Matthys got things started with a walk. Matthys then went to third on single by
Jenna Clark. After
Kelsey Luedtke walked to load the bases
Heidi Sande hit a ball that the second baseman couldn't handle and two runs came in to score.
In the bottom of the fifth the Wildcats again plated two runs on an Augsburg error. After
Katie Allen and
Beth Freier singled,
Ann Schmitz hit what appeared to be a single to left. Fortunately for the Wildcats, as the left fielded was looking up to see if she would have a play at home the ball went under her glove and rolled to the fence. Two runs scored and Schmitz raced into third to make it a 6-4 ballgame with only one out in the inning.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats luck ran out there. After Schmitz was stranded at third, SCU gave up a grand slam in the top of the sixth. That blast took the air out of the SCU rally.
The Auggies added a run in the seventh to make it 11-4.
Jenna Clark went 2-for-3 with a run scored in game two.
Heidi Sande went 2-for-4.
The Wildcats fall to 3-10 on the season and 0-2 in MIAC play. Augsburg improves to 14-8 and 4-0 in conference play.
St. Kate's returns to action on Thursday April 8th as they travel to Gustavus. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 4pm.
