It was an exciting Thursday afternoon of softball at St. Catherine University. St. Kate's beat Concordia 9-6 with an explosive second inning in the first game of a doubleheader. In the following game, the Wildcats lost a close game 4-3 in extra innings.
The Wildcats scored all 9 of their runs in the second inning of game one. After the Wildcats scored 2 runs off of a Cobber error, Jenna Clark singled with the bases loaded to bring another 2 runs across the plate. The next batter, Heidi Sande, bunted in a RBI. Two batters later, Katie Allen singled to left center to score another run. Kayla Bergerson, in her second batting appearance of the inning, singled to center field to put the Wildcats up 7-0. Reagan Kriechbaum singled to score Allen and St. Kate's scored on another Concordia error to finish the inning with a 9-0 lead.
Concordia scored 4 runs in the third inning and 2 runs in the fourth inning, but the Wildcats clamped down their defense to secure the 9-6 win.
Bergerson picked up another pitching win, completing all 7 innings, giving up 5 earned runs and striking out 5.
Game two turned into a defensive battle, with St. Kate's taking an early lead. After Kelsey Luedtke walked to start the inning, Ann Schmitz singled down the right field line to score Luedtke. The next batter, Katie Allen, singled to right center to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
The Cobbers scored a run in the top of the second inning and 2 runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead into the seventh inning. Beth Freier helped keep the Wildcats alive with a double to right center. Ann Schmitz singled to center field to movie Freier to third base and Katie Allen reached on a fielder's choice in which Freier scored on the throw to tie the score at 3-3.
Unfortunately, Concordia was able to score a run in the top of the ninth inning and held St. Kate's scoreless to take the extra-inning win.
Morgan Bohmbach pitched an excellent game, throwing all 9 innings, allowing 3 earned runs and recording 4 strikeouts.
St. Kate's travels to Macalester for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 24th at 3:00 p.m. Their next home game is on Saturday, May 1st at 1:00 p.m. against Hamline.
