The Wildcat softball team lost both games of a doubleheader to visiting St. Olaf Tuesday afternoon. St. Kate's lost game one 3-0 in a defensive battle and lost game two 12-3 after losing an early lead.
St. Olaf got on the scoreboard early in game one, scoring one run in the first inning and two runs in the third. Kayla Bergerson pitched a solid game, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits with 4 strikeouts in 7 innings of work. But the Wildcats' struggled offensively as they were unable to put a run across home plate. A late-inning comeback seemed plausible in the bottom of the 7th when Ann Schmitz and Katie Allen each singled to put runners on first and second with one out. Unfortunately, the Oles were able to record the final two outs to take the 3-0 win.
St. Kate's jump-started their offense early in game two, beginning with a double by Kelsey Luedtke. Heidi Sande eventually brought Luedtke home with a sacrifice fly to left field for a 1-0 Wildcat lead after the first inning.
After Katie Allen singled to start the second inning, Kaitlyn Frank homered to left field to extend the Wildcats' lead to 3-0 after two innings.
But that was the last time St. Kate's would lead as St. Olaf took advantage of costly Wildcat errors, scoring 6 runs in the third inning and 5 in the fifth on their way to a 12-3 win.
The Wildcats look to bounce back in MIAC play when they host a doubleheader against Concordia on Thursday, April 22nd at 4:00 p.m.
