The Wildcat softball team continued MIAC play as they traveled to Arden Hills Saturday afternoon, losing two games to host Bethel. St. Kate's lost the first game 8-0 and lost the second game 6-5 in a game that got away.
The first game appeared to be a low-scoring affair, with Bethel edging the Wildcats 1-0 after two innings. But in the bottom of the third inning the Royals exploded for 6 runs which proved to be a too much for St. Kate's to overcome.
Game two started much different than game one for the Wildcats. After Kelsey Luedtke and Heidi Sande reached first and second base, Ann Schmitz singled to right field to bring Luedtke across home plate for a 1-0 lead. Kaitlyn Frank then singled to center field to put St. Kate's up 2-0.
Bethel scored single runs in the bottom of the first and second innings to tie the score 2-2. The score remained scoreless until the top of the top of the sixth inning, when the Wildcats scored three runs. Frank and Regan Kriechbaum singled and then advanced a base off of Beth Freier's ground out to second base. Cassie Vennemann doubled to left to score two runs. The next batter, Cassey Rooney, tripled to right field to bring home Vennebann, and St. Kate's took a 5-2 lead into the seventh inning.
Unfortunately in the bottom of the seventh inning, Bethel hit a 3-run homerun to tie the score at 5-5. With two outs, the Royals generated the winning run to take the series sweep.
St. Kate's looks to take a pair of wins from Carleton when they travel to Northfield on Monday, April 12th at 4:00 p.m. They return home on April 15th to host St. Benedict in a doubleheader starting at 4:00 p.m.
