The Wildcat hockey team lost a tough game 4-1 to the # 6 ranked University of Wisconsin River Falls. With the loss SCU is now 9-2 on the season.
Despite the final score, the contest was an extremely tight game most of the night. The Falcons controlled much of the first period. They broke through just over half way into the period, and a few minutes later took advantage of a power play opportunity to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
In the second period the young Wildcats squad proved they can play with one of the best teams in the country. They Wildcats went on the offensive and controlled play and applied steady pressure on the Falcons. SCU outshot UWRF 14-7 in the second, and took advantage of a power play situation of their own to cut into the UWRF lead. At the 9:35 mark of the second
Bridget Braastad light up the lamp with a slap shot into the corner of the net to make it 2-1.
Ashley Tilton and
Aryn Ball assisted on the goal.
Unfortunately for St. Kate's, the UWRF goalie was on top of her game and made some great saves, several on breakaways, to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard the rest of the night.
UWRF scored early in the third to make it 3-1, and added a late goal to make the final score seem more lopsided the game was.
Mel Gerten had a strong night in the net, stopping 27 shots and keeping the Wildcats in the game.
SCU returns to the ice with an exhibition game against Robert Morris on January 16, at 2 pm.
