The Wildcats soccer team beat Macalester for the first time in school history Wednesday afternoon at St. Catherine.
The 3-2 overtime victory improves St. Kate's record to 4-5-2 overall, 1-4-1 in the M.I.A.C.
The score was tied 0-0 for most of the first half until sophomore Clare Saunders put in a spectacular first goal of the game. Taking the ball from a Macalester player, Saunders then impressively shot the ball with her left foot diagonally across the field. Her shot, from outside the 18 yard box on the left side of the field, found its mark in the top right corner of the net and give the Wildcats the 1-0 lead 39:33 into the game.
In the waning seconds of the first half Macalester was able to score to make it 1-1 at halftime.
The Wildcats again took the lead at 51:07. This time it was outstanding team work as
Megan Gosselin sent a ball from near midfield to the front of the penalty box area where a streaking
Kelsey Nistler out raced two Macalester defenders to the ball and put her breakaway goal into the bottom right corner of the net past the diving Scots goaltender.
Just when it appeared that St. Kate's would walk away with the 2-1 victory, the Scots put in the game-tying goal at 85:45 to force overtime.
Both teams played aggressively in overtime, but St. Kate's took advantage of their only corner kick of the game. Nistler placed a perfectly centered ball from the corner to an awaiting Christina Paik, who headed in the game-winning goal for the Wildcats.
For the game, Nistler and Gosselin recorded 3 shots each, while Paik, Kolletta Dorsher, and Gina Thorwick each had 2.
Junior goaltender Bridget Berry had 12 saves.
The Wildcats look to continue their winning ways this Saturday, October 10th, when they host Gustavus Adolphus at 1:00pm.
