Tennis closes out Florida trip with 6-1 defeat of Sweet Briar

COCOA BEACH, Fla. -- St. Catherine University tennis kept rolling on its spring trip Thursday, earning an 6-1 win over Sweet Briar in Cocoa Beach, Florida. The trip concludes with three victories improving the team to 8-3 on the season.

The Wildcats took control early by sweeping all three doubles flights. Faith Simon and Ashley King handled the top spot with a 6-3 win, Marie Pelletier and Ryanna Steinhaus added a 6-4 victory at No. 2, and Liliana Holmberg and Melanie Gravdahl closed out doubles play with a 6-1 win at No. 3.

In singles, St. Catherine won five of six matches to seal the team victory. Simon battled back after dropping the first set to win a super tiebreaker at No. 1, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9). Holmberg also rallied for a three-set win at No. 2, coming through 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8). King added another comeback win at No. 4, bouncing back from a first-set tiebreak loss to win 6-7 (5-7), 6-0, 1-0 (10-3).

The Wildcats were especially sharp in the lower half of the lineup. Ryanna Steinhaus earned a straight-set 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 5, while Melanie Gravdahl was dominant at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep. Sweet Briar's lone point came at No. 3 singles, where Maggie Minton defeated Marie Pelletier in three sets.

St. Kate's returns to Minnesota to face the bulk of their MIAC schedule starting with St. Olaf College on Saturday, March 21 at Baseline Tennis Center.
