MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University hockey team battled to the final second on Saturday afternoon, but a late push came up short in a 4-2 loss to Concordia College in MIAC play at the Moorhead Sports Center.
After a scoreless opening period, Concordia struck first at 9:02 in the second. St. Kate's answered quickly just 1:10 later when
Lilly Gillespie buried an unassisted even-strength goal at 10:12 to tie the game 1-1.
The Cobbers reclaimed the lead with a power-play goal at 14:26 and carried the 2-1 advantage into the third.
St. Kate's created chances and kept pressing, but a second power-player marker at 15:19 proved to be the game-winner. The Wildcats responded with a late surge, pulling the goalie and cashing in on the power play when
Rhiannon Ashworth scored a power-play, extra attacker goal at 18:07 off assisted from
Samantha Bogen and
Ana Myers to make it a one-goal game.
Concordia sealed it 20 seconds later with an empty-netter at 18:27 for the 4-2 final.
Lea Grassia made 25 saves in net for the Wildcats as the team out shot the Cobbers 32-29.
St. Kate's is home on Friday hosting No. 4 ranked Augsburg University at 7 pm at Drake Arena.
