ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University hockey team nearly pulled off a statement win on Friday night at Drake Arena as the No. 2 ranked Augsburg University Auggies escaped with a 5-4 overtime victory in MIAC play.
St. Kate's came out strong and struck first when sophomore
Ana Myers finished a feed from
Lauren Schmidt and
Samantha Bogen for the 1-0 lead.
After Augsburg tied it five minutes into the second, Myers answered, scoring her second of the night and 16th of the season. Myers goal was a tip off first-year
Isabella Brady's shot from the point putting the Wildcats back in front, 2-1. Later in the period, senior
Paige Loidolt extended the lead to 3-1 on a breakaway after Brady set the table again for her second assist of the night.
Augsburg closed the gap late in the second to make it 3-2, then used a power play goal at 11:21 of the third to knot it at 3-3. The Auggies grabbed their first lead of the night at 15:59 of the third, but the Wildcats weren't done.
With
Lea Grassia pulled and time winding down, Bogen delivered a clutch equalizer at 18:45 for an extra attacker, unassisted goal to tie the game 4-4 and force overtime. Augsburg went on to seal the 5-4 decision at 1:47 of overtime.
Grassia made 33 saves on the night while Myers led with two goals pushing her to rank fifth in Division III and lead the MIAC with the next player trailing by four goals.
St. Kate's travels to Minneapolis for game two of the MIAC series with the Auggies with a 4 pm scheduled time.
