ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University basketball team used a strong defensive effort and a composed fourth quarter to secure a 63-52 MIAC win over Macalester on Saturday afternoon at
Butler Center. The win puts St. Kate's at 8-9 on the season with a conference record of 3-7.
The Wildcats set the tone early forcing nine first quarter turnovers and transitions points to take a 16-11 lead. They maintained the momentum into the half carrying a 26-23 advantage into the break.
The third quarter featured several lead changes, but St. Kate's began to find rhythm inside and at the charity line. A combo of balanced scoring and rebounding allowed St. Kate's to close the third quarter ahead 40-33.
The Scots made a push early in the fourth, briefly taking a lead behind perimeter shooting. St. Kate's responded outscoring the Scots 23-19 in the final ten minutes to claim the eleven point victory.
Hattie Fox led with 14 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and three steals, while
Jordyn Peed added 12 points and a pair of blocks and
Kristen Oberle contributed ten points. As a team, St. Kate's forced 24 turnovers converting them into 13 points.
The Wildcats will travel to Northfield, Minnesota on Wednesday, January 28 to face St. Olaf College at 7 pm. The road game is their first of three before returning to
Butler Center on Saturday, February 7 hosting Augsburg for Senior Day.
