SAINT PETER, Minn. -- The St. Catherine hockey team dropped a 5-1 MIAC decision to No. 15-ranked Gustavus Adolphus on Friday night in Saint Peter.
The Gusties struck first midway through the opening period, capitalizing on a power play at 9:55 to give Gustavus a 1-0 lead. Just over two minutes later, they added an even-strength goal at 11:56, pushing the margin to 2-0 by the end of the first period despite early chances from the Wildcats.
Gustavus extended the lead early in the second period, making it 4-0 with 11 minutes left on the clock. St. Kate's responded with a momentum-shifting moment at 11:49, when
Ana Myers broke free and scored an unassisted goal, for her 14th of the season, putting the Wildcats on the board.
In the third period, the Wildcats pushed early, with Myers and
Paige Loidolt creating scoring opportunities, but a cross-checking penalty midway through the period proved costly, as Gustavus converted the power play to restore the four-goal cushion.
Addie Oettinger made 33 saves in goal for St. Kate's, while the Wildcats finished with 21 shots on net let by Myers with contributing three.
Game two of the MIAC series is scheduled for 2 pm on Saturday, January 24 at Drake Arena in St. Paul.
