MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University tennis team (9-2, 4-1 MIAC) defeated the College of St. Scholastica Saints on Friday evening at Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The 5-4 victory over the Saints came down to to a tiebreaker set won by
Faith Simon.
The Wildcats took two of the three doubles matches, with the No. 1 duo of Kelsey Dorr and Caitlyn Stadter delivering a commanding 8-4 win. Erica Wing and Simon followed suit at No. 2 doubles, cruising to an 8-2 victory and putting St. Kate's ahead early.
Despite St. Scholastica claiming the No. 3 doubles match, St. Kate's continued its dominance in singles. Dorr showcased her skill at No. 1 singles with a straight-set 6-0, 6-4 win, Liliana Holmberg also secured a crucial win in straight sets, cementing the Wildcats' overall team triumph. The match was ultimately decided by Simon's battle through a tough three-setter at No. 2 to edge out Katia Bartels 6-0, 5-7, 1-0 (10-4).
While the Saint fought back with victories at No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 singles, St. Catherine's early doubles dominance and clutch singles performances ensured their overall success in the match.
St. Kate's will host the No. 40 ranked Carleton College Knights at Baseline on Sunday, March 30.
