ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Catherine University basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Macalester College Scots on Wednesday evening on the road. The back and forth battle ended in favor of the Scots 64-57 putting the Wildcats at 10-10 overall with a MIAC record of 5-8.
St. Kate's was led by rookie
Jordyn Peed who scored 16 points as
Hattie Fox followed with ten points pulling down six rebounds.
Greta Schimnowski finished with nine points, two rebounds and one assist.
Maddie Young and
Emme Golembiewski each had a team-high nine rebounds each while Young shot six for seven on the night.
Rachel Randleman gave St. Kate's the lead early before the Scots gained momentum with back to back 3-pointers to build a 10-4 lead. Schimnowski responded with a three to cut the lead to 12-10 headed into the second quarter.
After a pair of free throws from Young and a good jumper from Peed, the Wildcats took the lead but the Scots answered with another three to gain the lead at 21-20. The back and forth continued with Peed hitting a clutch three to narrow the gap before adding a lay up at the buzzer to sit down one going into the half.
The back and forth battle continued out of the half with two lead changes and two tied scores as Schimnowski and Golembiewski chipped in six points each to knot it at 48-48 heading into the final quarter.
Macalester controlled the final ten minutes but St. Kate's put up a good fight including a three from Peed and a few timely layups. Turnovers and missed free throws hindered the team's comeback though as Macalester sealed the victory at the free throw line.
St. Kate's will host Carleton College on Saturday, February 8 for Senior Day at 1 pm.
